One of my favorite things to capture on a wedding day that really serves as a kick-off for the day and really ramps up my excitement…the details shots!
I think everyone knows the types of images I’m talking about here. From the classic shot of the invitations + wedding rings + florals + veils to images of the table settings to capturing the favors to signature décor pieces, everything tells a small story of the entire day!
Couples decide on so many little things that aren’t really little. Your wedding is your first “this is who you are together” statement to the world – which is why each detail is so important. I feel like photographing the details shots are meant to capture the brand, vibe, and personality of the wedding. A vibe is created from the coordination of your choices….it’s in the clothes, and the hairstyle, floral + decor choices, what they choose for the activities for family & friends. Couples decide on so many little things that aren’t really little, like color schemes and styles.
The saying “the devil is in the details” or “the proof is in the pudding” really couldn’t be more true when it comes to weddings. Every small details decision makes up the first initial representation of themselves as a couple. Each of your details choices complies into building the couple’s personal brand and they say so much about the couple. Their compilation is showcasing your planning process, how you work as a couple, and developing your personal style.
Not to mention, all details cost either time or money or both – and I believe if a couple (or maybe a loved one) believes in something enough to spend time or money on something, it should be photographed.
A word of advice – when searching for inspiration, use tools like Pinterest to inspire you to do your own thing. Your details may be as simple as basing your style around a favor that you LOVE. And that’s okay! Just make sure your wedding matches who you are as a pair.
Something to consider when choosing a photographer is to find someone who values your values. Some details are perishable, and I make it my mission to recognize these and capture it all for the couple in the item’s best state (maybe before they melt, or before the detail is altered or disturbed or moved or used by a guest).
Every wedding’s details are different (if you don’t believe me, take a look at the gallery below) – because every couple is different! Make sure your details capture the heart of who YOU are.
And while the details shots are surely important, make sure you hire the photographer with the heart to capture your story – not just a photographer who is good at only capturing the details. While details are important, they are just a piece of your day – and your marriage will go on long after the details fade.
It's about more than pretty portraits. This business is personal for me. I've lived through the planning stress, family dynamics, budget woes, and overwhelmed emotions that come with weddings.
